SIS and OpenSpirit Enter New Era of Collaboration

December, 2003

OpenSpirit middleware technology is now the preferred vehicle by which all Schlumberger Information Solutions (SIS) software applications access petrotechnical data. A memorandum of understanding executed by the two firms earlier this year details plans to expand their current business relationship.

“The OpenSpirit technology is the only truly open, standards based, multi-vendor E&P middleware available,” said Najib Abusalbi, SIS Integration Technology Champion, during a presentation to the OpenSpirit Users Group in early November. “It fits our technical vision, strategy, and framework for the oil & gas industry.”

Many SIS commercial products already use OpenSpirit's integration middleware to access multiple E&P data sources and to interact with other E&P products. Additionally, key SIS workflows such as the Living Model™ are enhanced today by the OpenSpirit technology. The recent MOU points to an increase in the number of SIS applications that will be OpenSpirit-enabled, as well as to added functionalities in the middleware and in end user applications.

As a result of ever-increasing sophistication in technology, the upstream oil & gas industry is able to collect extremely detailed petrotechnical data for analysis and decision making. This has caused a data explosion that, in the past, has bogged down end users and IT specialists who must reconcile incompatibilities between applications and the data stores they need to access before analysis can begin. The OpenSpirit integration middleware eliminates this reconciliation problem, resulting in drastic reductions in work flows, more time available for analysis, and speedier decision making.

“The expansion of our relationship with SIS is well aligned with our vision to provide access to all data from any platform to any software,” commented Dan Piette, President and CEO of OpenSpirit Corporation. “As a vendor-neutral company, we look forward to establishing similar relationships with other software partners to enable better integration of existing applications as well as development of new products that will enhance end user productivity.”
