Many
companies are increasingly trying to leverage the power of GIS (Geographic
Information Systems) to more coherently manage spatial data and to make
cross-discipline spatial data readily available to their users. Most companies
that have deployed GIS to their E&P users face several common challenges:
-
How to get the
G&G spatial data (e.g., well locations, 2D and 3D seismic locations,
and geologic fault and horizon data) into the GIS and keep it current
with the ever-changing contents of their G&G project data stores?
- How to motivate geoscientists and engineers
to leverage the GIS in their day-to-day work when most of their time
is spent using specialized geologic, geophysical, or engineering technical
applications that are not integrated into the GIS?
In order to address these challenges, OpenSpirit
offers two utilities which leverage the OpenSpirit Runtime and Data Connectors.
The OpenSpirit ArcView Extension enables ESRI’s ArcGIS Desktop (also
known as ArcView or ArcMap) to send OpenSpirit cursor location, data selection,
and GIS feature selection events. The extension works with the GIS features
generated by the OpenSpirit Scan Utility. It also allows a user to interactively
generate ESRI Grids (or geo-registered TIFF images) from any seismic or
non-seismic horizon.

Features
- Add all GIS features (either SDE or shape) generated by the OpenSpirit
Scan Utility for an entire data store to an ArcView project in a single
operation
- Connect to an interactive OpenSpirit session and broadcast a cursor
location from ArcView
- Connect to an interactive OpenSpirit session and broadcast an OpenSpirit
data selection events for any selected features (well, seismic volume,
and horizon grids)
- Use in conjunction with OpenSpirit Well, Section, and 3D Viewers to
view data
- Use as a data selector for other OpenSpirit-enabled application (or
native Landmark and Schlumberger applications via event gateways)
- Interactively select a horizon from a selected 3D survey feature or
2D map grid and dynamically create a geo-registered TIFF image of ESRI
Grid to represent any grid property coming from any OpenSpirit
connected datastore
- Interactively receive well pick data selection events and create new
3D point layers representing the well marker depths coming from any
OpenSpirit connected datastore
Benefits
- Leverage your investment in GIS technology into geotechnical application
workflows
- Use a standard GIS tool as a geographic data selection front-end for
subsurface data for any OpenSpirit-enabled application that listens
for data selection events (or native Landmark and Schlumberger applications
via event gateways)
- Geo-reference information in a GIS project, via cursor tracking, with
technical data displayed in any OpenSpirit-enabled application that
listens for cursor location events (or native Landmark via an event
gateway)
The OpenSpirit Scan Utility allows users to scan all or selected projects
in an OpenSpirit connected data store
and output the following GIS features as either shape files or as features
in an SDE-enabled datastore (if the SDE option is included):
- Project outline
- Well surface location
- Well bottom hole location
- Wellbore path (as a 3D shape)
- 2D seismic line (with SP as a measure)
- 2D seismic dataset
- 3D seismic survey outline
- 3D seismic volume outline
- 3D seismic live trace coverage
- Horizon grid extents
- Horizon catalog
Features
- Scan Utility works with any OpenSpirit supported data store
- Output data is transformed to a consistent user selected geographic
coordinate system (even if projects are in different coordinate systems)
Benefits
- Visualize your subsurface information in your GIS tool of choice
- Use a single tool for generation of GIS features independent of datastore
type or version
- Use in conjunction with OpenSpirit ArcGIS Extension
