The donated OpenSpirit Units Catalog and OpenSpirit Data Model will be available and downloadable as open standards through the Energistics website in the near future. OpenSpirit and Energistics are also identifying areas of cooperation that can be jointly carried out to ensure that the two organizations can make best use of each other’s strengths for the benefit of the upstream oil and natural gas industry as a whole.

OpenSpirit recognizes that the energy industry’s evolution to a true open-standards business model is dependent up on sharing – not duplicating – R&D efforts. OpenSpirit has spent seven years refining the data model and units catalog, which represent a true best-practices portfolio of open-standards development.

Both the OpenSpirit Units Catalog and the OpenSpirit Data Model will become part of the Energistics Energy Standards Resource Centre (ESRC) where the industry will be able to query and research available open standards. The ESRC will provide links to the Energistics standards as well as other freely available standards and standards organizations of interest to the E&P industry to assist in the overall communication, adoption and deployment of open standards.

The OpenSpirit Web Server is a simple, lightweight browsing tool that harnesses the power of Web 2.0 technology to allow users to see basic well, seismic, interpretation and culture data at the project level without initiating application licenses. The “casual browser experience” is great for executives and G&G managers who need a quick spatial view of their areas of interest. “Power users” can glance at relevant project data and if desired, broadcast selected data to the OpenSpirit-enabled applications on their desktop. Data can be accessed from any data store with an OpenSpirit Data Connector. This currently includes OpenWorks®, GeoFrame®, Finder®, PPDM, KINGDOM, Petra®, Recall, and ArcSDETM. Data may be viewed in table form or as simple graphical plots within the Web browser or imported into Excel® or OpenOffice with a single button click.

“Even if the user does not have OpenSpirit installed on their desktop, they can still get a global view of the latest information, and have the ability to browse data in a table format or best of all, get a spatial view of G&G data by overlaying true-life 3D raster imagery from a Geographic Exploration System,” says Clay Harter, Chief Technology Officer of OpenSpirit. “For experienced OpenSpirit users, it is the fastest way to browse project data, and then jump right into the business of interpretation by broadcasting selected G&G data straight into their OpenSpirit-enabled applications.”

The Web Server operates behind IT firewalls and satisfies a developer’s desire for a Web service that accesses a subset of their existing OpenSpirit framework. They can also integrate it with their existing portals and Web applications for maximum flexibility, allowing end users to access the Web services via http to see lists of data store types, installations and projects, as well as query for OpenSpirit data type attributes and return the kml (Keyhole Mark-up Language) needed to display points, polylines and polygon geometry of well, seismic and GIS features.

Sébastien Ferreira, Business Development Manager, Middle East, Africa and South Asia, joined OpenSpirit on June 1 and will be responsible for direct sales and support for the region, as well as managing the existing OpenSpirit authorized Agents and Resellers. He will be located in Abu Dhabi, UAE, pending approval of the Branch office by UAE officials. Arbaab Muzaffar, Pre-Sales Technical Advisor, will be joining Ferreira in this new region on July 16.

Nick Cabot came to OpenSpirit in May as the new Business Manager for Europe, CIS and Libya. He is located in Woking, Surrey (UK). Joining Cabot in the role of Pre-Sales Technical Advisor is David Wright.

Providing technical expertise for the Asia Pacific region is Len Chia, who joined the company as a Pre-Sales Technical Advisor in May and will initially be located in Perth, Australia.

The adapter will allow many of Landmark’s software products to update, read and delete data from third-party data sources, including GeoFrame®, Finder®, PPDM™, Recall™, KINGDOM™, SDE™ and Petra® applications. It expects to offer the adapter in late 2007.

The OpenSpirit-enabled application adapter will serve as a complement to the DecisionSpace environment’s existing integration benefits – extending connectivity to other vendors’ data stores by allowing DecisionSpace to interface through the OpenSpirit integration framework.
