Why am I getting a License "Check Out Failed" message when I try to run an application?
What does the message "Notification Service Not Licensed" mean?
We have the three license servers, when I try to start up the Shared Services the license won't start. Could it be a problem with the license.properties file?
We have the three license servers, but when I try to run an OpenSpirit application from the OSP client (Windows, Linux, or IRIX), I get a "Cannot check out OpenSpirit license for feature "XXX" and an "Invalid license key (inconsistent license key)(-8,xxx)" error in my DOS window. What is wrong?
How to tell if I have a temporary license?
What version of OpenSpirit will my current license work with?

Why am I getting a License "Check Out Failed" message when I try to run an application?

For some reason I can't run the Tab Selector.

Dialog comes up along the lines of:

  Check out failed. Retried 0 times.
Return code = -14
Cannot find SERVER hostname in
network database(-14,400)
License check out failed after retried
1 times.

feature=TabSelector
version=20010.26

policy= 1
path= 27002@fred.openspirit.com

The last return code = -14

It looks like you are having problems resolving the machine name.

See if you can ping the machine you are trying to connect to; in this case it would be "fred.openspirit.com". If not, try to ping the IP address. If neither of these work, try running "ipconfig /renew" from the command window and then try the above.

If only the IP address works, then modify your classes/License.properties file to have the IP address of the machine instead of the long name.

What does the message "Notification Service Not Licensed" mean?

If you get a "Not Licensed" message, check your license file which is located in OSP_HOME/external/flexlm/license.dat. If this is the first time you ran OpenSpirit, then your license file may not be correct. You either need to obtain an evaluation license, which you should have received when you got your evaluation CD, or a real license which you should have received when you got your purchased OpenSpirit CD.

Occasionally, when a license file is transmitted over email, the file will get some control characters in it that will cause the license file to become invalid. In this case, edit the file to remove the "^M"s. You may also need to remove some email header lines.

We have the three license servers, but when I try to start up the Shared Services the license won't start. Could it be a problem with the license.properties file?

You need to enter all three hosts in the OSP_HOME/classes/License.properties file.

The format is "port@host:port@host:port@host" - The separator is a colon.

There is an inconsistency between the FlexLM versions on the OSP server and the client. This only happens when a 3 license redundant server is employed.

The workaround is to copy the flexlm.jar file from the server ($OSP_HOME/external/flexlm/flexlm.jar) to the PC client
(C:\Program Files\OpenSpirit\external\flexlm\).

How can I tell if I have a temporary license?

In general all temporary licenses have both the version and expiration date the same. For example, the feature line below shows that the version 200606.07 is the same as 07-jun-2006, so, this is a temporary license.

FEATURE 3DViewer osp 200606.07 07-jun-2006 99 EBBAE0C1ACDD ck=185 \ SIGN=96CE55F00BBA

What version of OpenSpirit will my current license work with?

The easiest way to tell is by looking at the version number on the FEATURE line. Note that the version number is in the form of a date 200612.31 (December 31st 2006). If the date represented by the version number is later than the release date of the OpenSpirit software, then that license file will support that version of OpenSpirit.

2.9 released March 7th 2006

2.8.1 released August 9th, 2005

v2.8 released July 6th, 2005

v2.7.2 released May 13th, 2005
